Krystal’s Cosplayer Of The Month – February 2017

Krystal’s Cosplayer Of The Month – February 2017

1. What is your name and do you have an Alias?
My name is Heather, and my cosplay alias is currently HeatherAfter Cosplay.  I have also gone by H-chan, ~H~ and HeatherCosplay.
2. How long have you been cosplaying?
Over 20 years now.  My first cosplay happened at Anime Weekend Atlanta in 1996.
3. What was is or who inspired you to start?
To be honest I kind of went into it blind.  I’ve always enjoyed dressing-up and being creative, so when I heard that some people liked to attend conventions dressed as their favorite characters I immediately wanted to join in the fun!  A friend and I decided to make some costumes, and attended our first anime convention as cosplayers….before we had even heard the term “cosplay”.
4. Tell us about your first Cosplay experience?
I decided to cosplay as Devil Hunter Yohko because I could use my real hair (eBay and online shopping hadn’t been around for very long, and it was difficult to find places to buy wigs).  Also, the costume looked like it would be fairly easy to make.  I think my only regret was that I decided to cut bangs into my hair on the day of the con in an attempt to look more like the character.  I had no idea what I was doing, and my impromptu haircut did not turn out looking very good.  I still had a wonderful time though, and met some fun people.
5. What is a challenge you find with Cosplay?
There are so many fun characters to chose from!  I often find myself starting on a costume only to put it aside for months (or even years) because I’ll get excited by another idea.  So one of my biggest challenges is finishing my projects in a timely manner.  I also need more storage space for my costumes and cosplay materials.
6. What is the most enjoyable part of Cosplay for you?
Definitely the problem-solving aspect.  I love figuring-out how to take a piece of 2-D art and use it as inspiration to create an outfit that I can wear and feel good about.
7. Have you met any lasting friends because of Cosplay? Describe one.
Of course….and there are so many!  The one that has impacted my life the most is comic artist Jason P. Martin.  He was a guest at DragonCon 2000.  We became friends, and he helped me get work as a colorist and assistant inker in the comic industry.  Jason and I also teamed-up to create artwork for several gaming magazines, websites, books, etc.  We got married in 2003, and continue to make beautiful artwork together to this day.
8. Is Cosplay now a life time hobby for you?  Or say maybe Addiction?
Yes, and yes.  I find it to be a wonderful creative outlet.  To be honest I didn’t expect that I would still be at it after 20 years….but I just can’t seem to give it up!  So long as I watch my pennies I think it can be considered a healthy addiction though.  So it’s all good.
9. What is one or two characters that you want to do in the future?
So many choices!  Tifa has been a favorite of mine since I first cosplayed her in 1997.  I would love to revisit that character someday.
10. If you had to choose only one costume to wear for the rest of your life what would it be?
Only one?!  That is tough…  I’d probably choose Talia Al Ghul at the moment.  What girl wouldn’t want to be an immortal bad@ss who is married to Batman AND looks great in a catsuit?
11. What makes your decision on who you decide to Cosplay? EG:(Difficultly body match or do we look a like?)
I mostly go with what inspires me, but I also take my physical appearance into consideration.  For example, I adore the Pokemon games, but will probably never cosplay as one of the 10 year old trainers.  I know that (even though I’m vertically challenged) no one could ever mistake me for a 10 year old girl…..and I just wouldn’t ever feel that I could successfully pull it off.
12. Some People Don’t Understand why you do it. How do you answer them?
I have always been creative, and I love problem solving. Cosplay is an excellent outlet for both of those passions. I’m constantly learning new things.   Also, it helps keep me motivated to stay in shape, and it challenges me to be more confident (especially in front of cameras). Aside from all that, it’s just fun get dressed-up and play with makeup!
13. Who do you hope to inspire?
Myself!  It’s wonderful to look back at the things that I have created, and figure-out what techniques I can use again or improve upon.
14. Do you have plans for your next convention yet?
No plans as of now.
15. What are some insider tips or tricks you would like to share with fellow Cosplayers?
There are too many to list here.  I’m always learning new things, and like to share what I have discovered with the cosplay community.  So every Tuesday I share a cosplay related tip or tutorial on my Facebook page.  You can find them all in my Tip Tuesday album:
16. Can you explain how you feel in your Costume?
It truly depends on the costume.  My favorite ones help me feel more confident and outgoing.
17. What other fun things are you into?
Pretty much anything creative.  I love drawing and doing crafty things.  You can see some of my work on the MartinArt Studio facebook page:  I’m also addicted to reading and gaming.  Pokemon Go is my current video game obsession.
18. Have you had any funny or interesting stories from cosplaying?
Absolutely!  Everything from run-ins with law enforcement, hanging with Bruce Campbell, working as a spokesmodel, eating birthday cake with David Prowse, etc.  After cosplaying for a couple of decades you tend to build-up some fun stories and lots of memories.
19. Now that you have experience, what can you say to first timers that are nervous about losing their Cosplay virginity?
Don’t be nervous.  Most people in the cosplay community are very friendly.  I think we all love expressing our love and appreciation for nerdy pop culture, and it’s nice to be around people that like the same sorts of things.
20. Where can we look to find more of your Cosplaying?
My ‘HeatherAfter Cosplay’ facebook page is updated regularly with all my latest projects:
I am also on DeviantArt, but don’t post there as frequently as I should:
Thank you for talking with me today, we hope to see more amazing cosplay from you in the future!
