Krystal’s Cosplayer of the Month – April 2017
Cosplayer of the month is….
1. What is your name and do you have an Alias?
My name is Laura Sipilä and I m a Finnish girl living in Sweden. My cosplay name is Laura Craft, because Lara Croft is one of my favorite characters. The Craft name is when my friend tips me and said that it would fit with my name. Also that it would confuse people. ( I love crafting )
2. How long have you been cosplaying?
I started cosplaying about 10 years ago, but back then it was more about going to convention and do simple costumes. About 3 years back I have taken cosplay more seriously and I m trying to work as a cosplayer full time.
3. What was is or who inspired you to start?
4. Tell us about your first Cosplay experience?
My first cosplay experience was so exciting but also scary. I had so difficult to decide which character I would cosplay. At the time I was playing a lot of Dead or Alive and my favorite character was Ayane from the game. I did not know how to start making the costume, so I just bought clothes that was close to hers and then I remake them.
When it was the time to go to the convention I was so nervous. I was thinking about how people would react and if they would know the character. However when I put the costume on I was so proud of myself and also so happy. Walking around the convention was the best feeling, many people who knew which character I was and also wanted to ask how I did the costume. I was so happy when I came back home and I just wanted to make a new costume.
5. What is a challenge you find with Cosplay?
The most challenge part in cosplay for me is to find which character to cosplay, because I have so many I want to make. I have a folder with every character I want to cosplay and it’s just growing.
6. What is the most enjoyable part of Cosplay for you?
Building the props! I love building weapons, armor and making details. I like sewing, but building is something that I really enjoy. Also painting the props! It’s so relaxing.
7. Have you met any lasting friends because of Cosplay? Describe one.
Many! I have met so many awesome people through cosplay. But one person who I have become really close with and she is one of my best friend right now is Ida, Yuurih Cosplay. We knew each other before cosplay, but when she became more interested on doing costumes, we could not stop being with each other. We usually work together with companies or do characters from same games/anime or movie. The best part is that we have the same Finnish humor and we can’t stop laughing when we are together.
8. Is Cosplay now a life time hobby for you? Or say maybe Addiction?
9. What is one or two characters that you want to do in the future?
My dream cosplay is to make Sarah Kerrigan Queen of Blades from Starcraft. I have been dreaming about making this cosplay for many years, but I feel like I need to be better with different materials before doing this. I will try to start growing more this year, so I can make it soon.
10. If you had to choose only one costume to wear for the rest of your life what would it be?
One costume to choose to wear rest of my life! That is hard! If I would not grow older I would choose classic Lara, because I really like the design. However I would not like wearing it when I m a old lady, so I need to choose something else. It would be one of Lara Croft outfits from the games. I really love the design of Tomb Raider immortal guardian. It would be the one!
11. What makes your decision on who you decide to Cosplay? EG:(Difficultly body match or do we look a like?)
My decisions usually goes if I can learn some new techniques from that costume and also how difficult the costume is. Sometimes if I look like the character. If people have told me that I look like some character, I will do it.
12. Some People Don’t Understand why you do it. How do you answer them?
When people have hard to understand what cosplay is, I usually try to explain it to them as much in details as possible. I also show them pictures and videos how much work some people put to their costumes. Sometimes I tell them that they should go to a event/convention and see how much fun it is. Some people do it and tells me how much fun they had and now they want to make a costume. I love it when more and more people want to do it!
13. Who do you hope to inspire?
Everybody who doesn’t know what cosplay is and show them that it’s a really awesome hobby or work. Spread the cosplay love!
14. Do you have plans for your next convention yet?
There was a convention I really wanted to go, but it was the same day as my cosplay courses was, so I could not go. But we will see what my next convention will be.
15. What are some insider tips or tricks you would like to share with fellow Cosplayers?
Plan! Before you start with your cosplay costume, draw/write or do a mind map of the character you are going to make. It’s going to help you a lot when you start making the costume. You know where to start and how much work you need to put in to the costume.
16. Can you explain how you feel in your Costume?
When I wear a costume is the best feeling. I become the character, I feel like a hero and I think a lot of cosplayers feels like that. That you can be someone else for a day and not think about other problems. You feel free and give the love to the other people who loves the character as much as you do.
17. What other fun things are you into?
Other things I m in to is making Youtube videos/drawing and playing games. I will start animating again, because I have been missing it a lot these couple of years.
18. Have you had any funny or interesting stories from cosplaying?
Many! But one story I really love telling is when I was younger and went to my 4 convention here in Sweden. Me and my friends did not have any sleeping place at the convention, because we did not have the money. Before the convention me and my friend try to finish our Assassins Creed female version costumes and we where awake 2 days before the convention. We tried to sleep a little bit before we needed to travel to convention, but we did not. We came to convention and we where awake 2 days there and had a lot of fun! We maybe got 1 hour sleep one of the nights. The last day we took a luxuries breaks west they had at the convention. We took a lot of food and sat at the table. We started eating and my friend was sitting in front of me. Suddenly everything was pitch black to me, then I woke up and looked at my friend, with big eyes. I asked her what happened! She looks at me and starts laughing so hard. After couple of minutes laughing she tells me that I fell a sleep and that my head just went back of my neck and then back when I woke up. I started laughing and just understood that I fell asleep when I was eating. After that convention I try to sleep more, but sometimes is hard. Because you need to finish a costume or have other plans.
19. Now that you have experience, what can you say to first timers that are nervous about loosing their Cosplay virginity?
Don’t be afraid! I know the feeling about being nervous how people will react and what will they say. You will meet so many wonderful people, who loves the same character as much as you do and also other people who are cosplaying as the character. If you don’t want to go alone ask some of your friends to come with you. You can also write to me if you are wondering something!
