July’s Cosplayer Of The Month

July’s Cosplayer Of The Month is…

Your name and Alias :
My name is Anne-Marie but my screeen name is Salvi

How long have you been cosplaying?
I started in the summer of 2008, so 7 years already!

What inspired you to start?
I had been drawn for a while to the idea of making costumes of characters I liked. Then in 2008, my best friend told me about those “anime conventions” where people dressed as fictionnal characters for fun, and I was immediately in.

What was your first Cosplay experience?
Unofficially, my father and I tried to make a dress to look like Eowyn’s white dress in the Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers movie when I was about 14. But my first real cosplay, made by my own hands, was in 2008. I had no idea how to sew, but I managed to make a costume of Abarai Renji, from Bleach. Poor fabric choice, no wig and tattoos drawn with a eyeliner, I still had a blast and my cosplayer life was instantly born.

What do you find a challenge with Cosplay?
I am a cosplayer that tends to take accuracy very seriously. Unfortunately, fictionnal character aren’t always drawn with the idea of being realised in the real world in mind. So I have to get very creative to be able to make my cosplays the way I have in mind… It’s always heart wrenching when I have to sacrifice accuracy for practicality.

What is the most enjoyable part of Cosplay for you?
Being at the conventions with my friends. Those memories are what I look forward everytime. We laugh, we spend quality time together, and we dance quite a lot too!

Have you met any lasting friends because of Cosplay?
Yes! Almost all of my closest friends were met through cosplay. I met them between 2009-2010. We decided to form a cosplay group called Edge a few years ago.

Do you plan on continuing cosplaying for years to come?
I can’t see any reason not to! I think cosplay is a wonderful hobby. It’s creative and kinda magic too, because you get to dress up as your favorite character for a day and just get out of your ordinary life for a while..

What is one or two characters that you want to do but haven’t yet?
I’ve always wanted to do a costume from CardCaptor Sakura. It’s the first anime I watched, and I’m still so amazed by her outfits! I have a few in mind, along with a couple Cards designs too!

If you had to choose only one costume to wear for the rest of your life what would it be?
Hmmm possibly Sora (Kingdom Hearts). It’s pretty comfy, and I feel so good when I wear it! He’s a really fun character, and I LOVE Kingdom Hearts.

What is your favorite Convention? (FanExpo, Comicon, Anime Con….) and why?
I’d say Otakuthon (Montréal). It was first convention and the one I attended every year since 2008. It’s kind of nostalgic, and I can see it evolving. Last year, I also had the chance to attend Katsucon (MD, USA) and I absolutely loved it. The decor is so enchanting and very spacious too!

What would you say to someone that knows nothing about Cosplay but is asking why you do it?
“Don’t you wish you could play pretend one last time? With cosplay, not only you get to do that, but you get to make the costume yourself, push your limits and learn everyday.”

Would you want to encourage friends or family to get into cosplay?
Not really. I talk about it, yes, but it’s a hobby people have to be interested in in the first place. Despite all the fun you get from it, cosplay takes a lot of time and money.

Do you have plans for your next convention yet?
Yes! I’m planning on making Aqua’s costume from Kingdom Hearts : Birth by Sleep. She’s the strong woman in the series and I love her design. This costume has been in the making since 2011, but I have to abandon the project twice already, for different reasons. Now, I’m ready to make it happen.

Do you have any tips or trick you would like to share with fellow Cosplayers?
Just remember to have fun. If cosplay becomes too stressful, and discouraging, stop for a moment, take a step back and remember why you do it. And the answer should always be “to have fun.”
