A new study shows … are the four most dangerous words
Believe it or not, there is a war on science. It is not “Trump’s War on Science” but a general war on science being perpetrated by both the left and the right. I try to remove politics from the equation but politics seems to be the driving force on bad science. What makes the problem even more confounded is the fact that many scientists are fueling the masses of ignorance with flawed data that seems to be almost purposeful in its dissemination.
I personally began a methodical dissection of various peer-reviewed journals. What I found was more problems than solutions. Everything from health to physics and everything in between seems to be getting the royal shaft when it comes to giving us good data. Due to a series of highly flawed, non-standardized review processes, we get so much bad science that the good science tends to get lost in the shuffle.
These are just a few of the many problems discovered in my research. The Washington Post did a story showing many scientific studies can’t be replicated. Now I am not a fan of the post so I looked into this problem as I wrote here.
Perhaps you have heard of John Ioannidis? No? Well he wrote a shocking paper, “Why Most Published Research Findings Are False,” which was a real eye opener for those who bothered to read it.
So we have bad science out there but “it’s not the scientist it’s those idiot <INSERT HERE> who are the real problem.” I suspect it is this sentence that is the real problem but let’s look at those idiots. A 2012 Gallup poll found that “58 percent of Republicans believe that God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years,” compared with 41 percent of Democrats. This poll reveals that religion, not science drives many people’s core beliefs. A 2011 survey by the Public Religion Research Institute found that 81 percent of Democrats but only 49 percent of Republicans believe that Earth is getting warmer. This one shows that one side or the other is looking at some seriously bad science to back their beliefs. With so many opinionated people who disagree and are passionate in that disagreement, trouble is sure to follow.
So who is waging the war on science.
Is it the Right
- Anti Abortion
- Climate Change is not Real
Is it the Left
- “everything natural is good” and “everything unnatural is bad.”
- Anti-energy that is not Solar
- Anti Genetic Engineering
We also have the History Channel, Science Channel, and others putting out tons of shows about aliens, magic, and spirits. They have shows about science and conspiracies and most of those have so many flaws that I want to scream. Major networks have shows like Dr Oz, The Doctors, and others that also tend to quote bad science and/or give tidbits of partial truths. Hollywood is real big with putting science in movies and shows. Unfortunately the science is shoddy at best in most of them. So with all of this influence coming into out lives from the entertainment industry, how are our children supposed to know what is real and what is not? We have a war on science and it is being waged all around us by nearly everyone. Whenever I hear someone quote a study I want to pull out my phone and look it up. More often than not I discover the study quoted does not say what was quoted or worse, it was just a crap study. What are we to do?
